Kids on ‘Inconvenient Ride’ to visit
By Janet DelTufo, Assistant Editor
A small group of elementary school children will ride their bikes through Wickenburg later this week while participating in “An Inconvenient Ride and the Global to Local Celebration.”
A reception for the students will take place at Town Hall Sunday (April 13) and will begin at 8 a.m.
Six students will travel a total of 5,400 miles, through four time zones with three initiatives in mind. It is their hope that this project will help raise environmental awareness.
“To raise awareness of local programs in our community that are making a tangible difference in the environment, we are proud to present An Inconvenient Ride and Global to Local,” the Inconvenient Ride Web site states. “These two interconnected events serve to highlight and support the programs of (Seattle) Mayor Greg Nickels’ Climate Action Now, The Green Seattle Partnership and Project Earth Care.”
The students began their trip on March 31 from Washington, D.C. The riders are expected to follow a route that goes through cities that have signed on to Nickels’ Climate Action Now Initiative.
Taking a southern route across the country, the trip will cover 5,400 miles in length and will involve students at all grade levels.
The students are expected to be in Tucson and Phoenix before arriving in Wickenburg, and will depart Wickenburg for Bullhead City and Las Vegas. They are scheduled to arrive back in Seattle on Earth Day April 22 to kick off the Global to Local celebration.
The public is encouraged to attend the reception to meet and greet the elementary school riders.
