Significant City History

Like much of California, San Francisco got its start when a
Spanish exploration party, led by Don Gaspar de Portolà arrived
on November 2, 1769.

The California Gold Rush brought a flood of prospectors who
gathered in San Francisco, raising the population from 1,000 in
1848 to 25,000 by December 1849

On April 18, 1906, a major earthquake struck San Francisco
collapsing buildings & igniting a fire that spread across the city,
burning out of control for several days.
