First settlement established in 1695.
In 1791, Alexandria was included in the area chosen by George Washington to become the District of Columbia.
From 1828 to 1836, Alexandria was home to the Franklin & Armfield Slave Market, one of the largest slave trading companies in the country.
At the opening of the American Civil War, the city was occupied by Federal troops until the end of the war, making it the longest held city during the war.

1. Eco-City Alexandria/Environmental Action Plan Beginning in spring 2007, the City of Alexandria partnered with Virginia Tech’s Department of Urban Affairs and Planning (UAP) to design and facilitate a new, strategic collaborative planning process, called Eco-City Alexandria, to create an Eco-City Charter (June 2008) and Environmental Action Plan (Fall 2008) to guide Alexandria toward sustainability.
2. Air Quality The Division of Environmental Quality (DEQ) maintains and operates an Ambient Air Monitoring station at 517 N. St. Asaph Street, Alexandria. Carbon Monoxide (CO), Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), and Particulate Matter (PM10) are measured year round. Ozone (O3) is measured during the months of April through September.
3. Watershed Management/Water Quality In Alexandria, Four Mile Run, Hunting Creek/Cameron Run, and Backlick Run are considered impaired by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. A leading source of this impairment is polluted stormwater. The City of Alexandria strives to educate and inform the public on the importance of our local waterways, watersheds, and stormwater related issues through brochures, televised messages, and signs.
4. Contaminated Lands The City of Alexandria in partnership with Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has implemented a program to prevent, mitigate, and remediate (if needed) contaminated lands within the city. |
