Significant City History
Columbia was created in 1787 by the South Carolina General Assembly & became chartered as a city in 1854.

In 1801, South Carolina College (now known as the University of South Carolina) was founded in Columbia.

On Feb. 17, 1865, during the Civil War, much of Columbia was was destroyed by fire while being occupied by Union troops under the command of General William Tecumseh Sherman.

Shortly after the attacks on Pearl Harbor, Lt. Colonel Jimmy Doolittle's pilots began training for the Doolittle Raid over Tokyo at what is now Columbia Metropolitan Airport
